With its 9 meters in height, 9.6 meters length and 5 meters width, this is one of the largest equestrian sculptures in the world. Its location atop the Vítkov Hill is historically tied to the site of the famous victorious battle of a small Hussite army well outnumbered by the Crusaders that took place here on July 14, 1420. The sculpture was designed by Bohumil Kafka (1878-1942), a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His model was a Noriker stallion named Theseus. As is evident from the breeding records, Theseus was raised in the provincial stud farm in Tlumačov. Bohumil Kafka worked on the sculpture from 1931, completed it during the early years of WWII and then unexpectedly died in 1942. An Association for the Construction of a Žižka Monument was founded in 1882. After WWI, the Vítkov Hill was selected as the location for the construction of the Liberation Monument and the decision was made to place the Jan Žižka sculpture there.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>However, the artist Bohumil Kafka had to seriously fight for his artistic vision. One reason for his opposition was an error that seems rather amusing from today’s perspective. A number of parliament members mistook the word “Noriker” for “Nordic.” At the time, increasing concerns about Nazi Germany caused the representatives to accuse the artist of disrupting national pride. An exhausted Kafka completed his plaster model in November 1941, but died a year later.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The perspective and evaluation of the Hussite movement represented many points of view. In the mid-19th century, it was viewed romantically, relevant to the national revival movement. Others presented Hussites as the historic pinnacle of the population’s attempts to gain power. This ideological view was particularly promoted by the Communist regime, that viewed it as the first evidence of the victory of people over their masters.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Yet the Vítkov Hill pantheon was built between 1928 and 1938 and was meant to serve as the permanent commemoration of the heroism of the Czechoslovak Legions during WWI, when they fought the Bolsheviks. Over the course of its construction, the idea emerged that the monument would become a glorious mausoleum of Czechoslovak Presidents. But neither one of these intents came to fruition.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Our first President, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, hated pompousness and vehemently rejected the Vítkov pantheon as his burial place. The actual construction of the pantheon was then halted by WWII that shadowed the first war with even greater terrors. Additionally, shortly thereafter, Czechoslovakia experienced a Communist putsch. Inspired by the Lenin mausoleum in Moscow, the Communist regime turned the monument into a location to display the body of the first Communist President, Klement Gottwald, putting an end to all previous ideas about the function of the pantheon.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Nonetheless, all this was preceded by honest artistic effort on part of Bohumil Kafka. Even so, his intent to create a monumental location became the subject of a pre-war political fight. For entire decades, Kafka continued to be attacked by various “consultants” who wanted to review his artistic vision. Among the opponents was Senator František Udržal, whose attacks filled both the national newspapers and many cartoons. They serve as evidence that many citizens failed to grasp the absurdity of the dispute. Unfortunately, Kafka was very exhausted by the constant need to defend his work. Many times it seemed the work would remain unfinished. Additionally, everything was further complicated by WWII.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Despite this, in the early 1940s, Kafka delivered his plaster model of the sculpture (its bronze casting is available for viewing at the first floor of the monument). Unfortunately, he didn’t live to see his work completed in its monumental form and finally unveiled on July 14, 1950, commemorating the 530th anniversary of the Vítkov battle. Kafka died in the middle of WWII in 1942.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Kafka’s notes show that his work was significantly influenced by the experiences of Josef Václav Myslbek. At the time, Kafka was working less than two decades after the construction of Myslbek’s St. Wenceslas statue on Wenceslas Square. Records of Kafka’s discussion with Myslbek’s plasterer, Victor Silvester, in 1931 are still available. Kafka’s interest focused particularly on technical solutions of the statue’s structural stability, as well as the method of producing clay templates for bronze castings of such a massive sculpture.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>For many decades, Jan Žižka has remained the symbol of the Vítkov monument and time has confirmed Kafka’s artistic authenticity. His Žižka is a tough and strong leader of an army, yet without a trace of pride or arrogance. Thanks to the statue, his Noriker horse, Theseus, also gained immortality. But for him, posing for one of the most famous Czechoslovak sculptures was only a small episode in life.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Unfortunately, due to all the aspects of the monument we have discussed, the Vítkov sculpture lives a rather lonely life. It’s only admired by a few random visitors, although it would deserve to be standing in the very center of tourist
